NZ Herald

Rebuilt and ongoing support for the NZ Herald mobile app, sharpening speed and stability for hundreds of thousands of readers and launching premium subscriptions.

The challenge

The NZ Herald app serves news to hundreds of thousands of readers, and performance problems needed fixing against a tight Rugby World Cup deadline, when a rebuild from scratch was not an option.

What we built

We carefully refactored the existing codebase rather than starting over, improving speed and stability while keeping the app live. The work included adopting the Washington Post CMS framework and launching a premium subscription service, with a lead developer embedded in the Herald team to keep delivery moving.

The result

The app delivers a faster, more stable experience at national scale, and our continued support keeps it performing for one of New Zealand's most-read news brands.
